The oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world, held in San Francisco since 1912. The race runs from Howard and Fremont streets to the Great Highway, featuring a 12K course and 15K “Breakers Bonus” option, followed by a festival in Golden Gate Park.
A moving course
through a live city
Producing a race across San Francisco means turning an active city into an event venue. The course spans multiple neighborhoods and requires coordination across police, fire, transit, parking, public works and neighborhood partners—each with its own requirements, approvals and timelines.
Then it happens overnight. Start and finish structures, timing equipment, signage, fencing, hydration stations and medical positions are installed between street closure and race start. As runners move across the city, breakdown follows behind—reopening streets in waves while race operations continue farther down the course.
